What This Archive Covers
The focus is narrow by design. Flint Parlor addresses three interconnected subject areas: the hand tools used by early settlers in Canada (primarily the period from the 1780s to the 1870s), the history of blacksmithing on the Canadian frontier, and the pre-industrial craft trades — coopering, tanning, wheelwrighting, millwrighting — that formed the economic infrastructure of settlement communities.
The geographic scope is primarily Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Lower Canada (now Québec), with attention to the Maritime settlements where relevant. The time frame is deliberately the pre-industrial era — not because later periods are less interesting, but because the hand-tool craft period has received less systematic documentation than the industrial era that followed it.
Editorial Approach
Articles on this site draw on published academic scholarship, archival documentation, and the material culture evidence held in Canadian public collections. Where interpretations are contested in the scholarly literature, that contestation is noted rather than resolved artificially.
